Join the ANU Climate Alumni Leadership Program 2024 and attend COP29

Have you always wanted to attend the international climate negotiations Conference of the Parties (COP) meeting and have your voice heard?

Are you a First Nations or Pacific Islander postgraduate student at the ANU?

Have you got a background in climate change issues, or something important to say?

The ANU Pacific Institute is offering up to 2-3 fellowships to support the emerging generation of First Nations or Pacific Islander leaders, to contribute to game-changing climate change negotiations and outcomes, by joining the ANU Climate Alumni Leadership Program.

Successful applicants will receive mentoring from leading ANU climate change negotiators and scholars, including those from a First Nations and Pacific Islander background. They will receive support to attend the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP), held in Baku, Azerbaijan, 11-22 November 2024.  Applicants must be available to attend the conference in full. 

The application deadline is 5pm (Canberra time) on Monday 23 September 2024Late applications will not be accepted.

Field of study

Understanding Climate Change Negotiations and Climate Change Issues

Eligibility

The award will be available for 2-3 continuing ANU PhD or Masters students who meet the following Eligibility Criteria:

  1. a domestic and/or international student; and
  2. undertaking a PhD/Masters project related to climate change, or with a keen interest in climate change issues, supported by a developed project brief; and
  3. must be either First Nations Indigenous Australian or Pacific Islander.

Applications that don't meet these criteria will not be considered.

Benefits

  • ANU Pacific Institute will award support costs for accommodation, return economy flights, and a per diem while in Baku, Azerbaijan for COP29 from 11-22 November 2024. 
  • An additional benefit is the opportunity for a professional or personal mentorship with a member of the ANU Climate Alumni Leadership program (Sala Dr George Carter, Dr Virginia Marshall and Associate Professor Siobhan McDonnell). 

Selection criteria

Selection will be made on the basis of the following Selection criteria:

  1. applicability of the candidate’s project to contribute to climate change negotiations, civil society activities or other climate change related outcomes at COP; and
  2. academic merit, potential and performance based on their academic record, referee reports and other evidence; and
  3. the applicant's background and reasons for seeking the scholarship including applicant's demonstration of how the scholarship could be a game-changer for climate change negotiations, or other activities at COP.

Application process

Applicants should complete the electronic form and upload the following documents combined in one PDF:

  1. A concise letter (1-2 pages) addressing the Eligibility Criteria. Applications that do not address the Eligibility Criteria will not be considered. The letter must also outline the applicant's background and explain why this scholarship would be a game-changer for them or for the COP29 negotiations, civil society activities or other climate change related outcomes at COP.
  2. Supporting documents relating to the Selection Criteria, including:
    • 2 references from supervisors and/or other relevant sources; and
    • Academic transcripts and other relevant documents.
  3. CV (of no more than 4 pages).

Incomplete applications will not be considered.
